Sadie's 10th Birthday Trip - Day 3 (8/16/10)

Monday we headed out early to visit the San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park. This is not the zoo, but is another HUGE park that is just amazing. It plays a huge part in the San Diego Zoo's conservation work and they try to have the animals in natural, comfortable environments so that they will reproduce. Kellen is a volunteer at the Wild Animal Park, so he was our own personal travel guide!
You could take a hot air balloon ride (just up and down but still cool)

We took a tram ride on the Journey Into Africa and saw so many amazing animals and absolutely beautiful scenery. Sorry for all the pics, but narrowing down to just these was hard!
Kellen, Me and Sadie

Mom and Aunt Jeanie

Flamingos!

This guy is a Northern White Rhino, one of two at the Park. His top horn was removed by poachers. The saddest thing? There are only 7 of these left in the whole world, and it is believed that they are extinct in the wild. :(

Ostrich eggs

Not sure what this species is...

Flamingo mamma with her babies!

Big lionness!

Every day at the same time is the Elephant Rush, where the elephants are let out of their house and allowed to roam free for the rest of the day. The keepers hide lots of goodies all over so the elephants are excited to come out and have some treats!
Here they come!

A mamma and her calf

Baby drinking water

The Park has a special program that pairs baby cheetahs with a dog, who becomes their buddy for life. Sounds weird, I know. Pairing them with a dog friend helps the cheetah to be able to be shown off in public, as it learns to be calm and not run away in fear. We got to see two cheetahs with this dog (I forgot his name...)

And the Lorikeets. Sadie had never fed one before. Kellen had, obviously. :)

We didn't get to see everything, as the park is so huge and it was getting HOT! But we had a wonderful time and will for sure have to come back someday!
