First Ever Swim Meet!!

We are sooo very lucky to live in a wonderful neighborhood with two neighborhood pools and an HOA that offers amazing swim lessons and a swim team. This year Sadie joined the swim team and has been loving it! From the time she was a toddler, Sadie has loved the water and I always wondered if she would one day try her hand at swimming on a team. I was right. ;)

Since this was her first year and we don't do any swimming during the non-summer months, Sadie was put on a beginner team. It has been so fun to watch her learn so quickly the different strokes, how to dive, and even the underwater flip turns!

There are several swim meets through the summer, but due to our busy schedule, Sadie will only be able to compete in two. Two weeks ago she had her very first meet! Each child had to choose two strokes they wanted to do and then swam both strokes twice, once in a relay and once as an individual. Sadie picked freestyle and breaststroke.

The meet was long and VERY hot, but it was really fun to cheer on Sadie and the other kids from our neighborhood. Sadie's coaches had her compete in the 8 and under relays because she is a beginner, but she was with the 9 and 10 year olds for the individual races. She did well in her freestyle race and individual, but she struggled with breaststroke. I was quite surprised when she picked it, because it's HARD! But she tried very hard and we were so proud of her.
Look at that cutie! (Right in the middle)

I was unsure of how everything worked since I had never been to a swim meet before. But they are surprisingly organized despite a TON of kids competing. Sadie's coaches wrote her event numbers and strokes in Sharpie so she would know when to go. Smart!

This pool had blocks for the swimmers to start on. Ours does not. Many of the kids were afraid to dive off of them and many that did ended up belly-flopping. Sadie did awesome, she got up there and dove off beautifully each time! Yeah for our diver! (This makes me especially glad, since I have never been able to dive. Seriously, since I was a kid.)

Sadie, you ROCK!! :)
